Scrabble Sankey

I could not resist choosing a playful subject to practise Sankey diagram... and I love word games! So here it is: the scrabble sankey! Play with it and have fun!

Helps you to find words starting with and/or ending in a specific letter.

Click on a letter on the y-axis to select and filter the words starting with that specific letter.

Click on a letter on the x-axis to select and filter the words ending in that letter.

Hover and click on a cell/rectangle on the heatmap to see, select and filter the words with those specific first & last letters.


If you double click on a letter on the axis or on a cell/rectangle on the heatmap, the list of selected words appears on the right hand side. The number appearing by each word in superscript is its score in the Scrabble game.

If you click on a word, its meaning will appear at the bottom of the page.

Shows an overview of all the words in SOWPODS dictionary.

In the sankey diagram words are considered as strings of letters (spread horizontally starting from letter index 1 to the word's length). Each node represents a letter at a specific letter index. Each link connects two adjacent letters of a word.

Double click on a node to narrow down the current word list to those words that have the selected letter at that specific letter index.

Double click on a link to narrow down the current word list to those words that have the selected consecutive letters at those specific letter indices.

Drag out a node to discard all words containing that specific letter at that specific letter index.

Drag out a link to discard all words containing the selected consecutive letters at those specific letter indices.

If you click on the Reset button, the word list filtration caused by clicking/dragging nodes/links will be reset to none.

You can download the list of the words appearing in the Sankey diagram at whatever step you like.


You can set the lower and upper limit for the length of words using the sliders. The result will be reflected on the heatmap and the sankey diagram.


The Reset button will remove any selections node/link or first/last letter. It will restore the sankey diagram considering only the sliders' information. (all words between the specified min & max word lengths)

The Download button will download all the words currently shown in the sankey diagram in .txt format.

You can also add your own text into the text box (ideas: baby names, place names, ...)

Since there are 7 tiles at each round, as a reasonable start, the default minimum and maximum word length are set to 3 and 10, recpectively. It is still possible to dig deeper and play with the word length limits using the sliders.

The Sankey diagram is a multilevel network idiom that combines a node-link diagram with a derived cluster hierarchy, intending the path tracing as the main desired task.
